Terry Heenan,
Head of Management of Violence and
Aggression
Terry has worked for Partnerships in Care (PiC) for over 14
years and is based at the Head office in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire
as Head of Management of Violence and Aggression (MVA).
His role is to oversee the MVA function across PiC Hospitals and
Units. This requires maintaining and improving on best practice
across the units which care for patients with complex mental health
needs, including mental illness, personality disorders, learning
disabilities and/or brain injury. It also involves operating to
nationally recognised minimum standards and implementing the
principles, practice, interventions and techniques of the General
Services Association (GSA).
This role allows Terry to facilitate and oversee GSA tutor
training for all PiC Hospitals and Units as well as liaising with
and training external organisations such as other Independent
Sector providers as well as NHS Trusts.
Terry is a member of the GSA Senior Tutor group and is on the
GSA Board of Directors where he takes the lead for the
association's physical skills core curriculum.
In October of 2003, Terry was invited to attend, on behalf of
the Independent/ Private Sector, a Cross-Government Group on the
Management of Violence and the use of Restraint, chaired by Malcolm
Rae (OBE), National Institute for Mental Health in England (NIMHE).
The Group was formed following a request by a Health Minister,
Jacqui Smith, and the Home Office Minister, Beverly Hughs, to
improve and deliver a more consistent cross-government policy on
the management of violence and the use of restraint.
Terry provides expert advice to:
- An expert reference group for The Counter Fraud and Security
Management Service (NHS SMS)
He has also recently provided expert advice to:
- A steering group formed by the Health and Safety Executive
(HSE);
- An expert panel for the National Institute for Mental Health in
England (NIMHE) for a mandatory national accreditation and
regulation scheme for MVA trainers.
In December of 2005 Terry and colleagues gained British
Institute of Learning Disabilities (BILD) Accreditation for the
Learning Disability sites within Partnerships in Care.
David McManus BSc. (Hons) A.H.C.I.M.A. CGLI
PiC North West Services Training Officer
NTC Lead Tutor – Mandatory Courses
David joined Partnerships in Care in 1998 as Head Chef at The
Spinney Hospital in
Atherton. There he was responsible for the implementation and
delivery of catering
specific training, including National Vocational Qualifications. As
the company
developed and expanded David took on the role of Training and
Development Officer for PiC’s North West Services in 2003, and is
now based at Arbury Court in Warrington.
As a registered tutor with the Chartered Institute of Environmental
Health (C.I.E.H.)
David is responsible for the delivery of CIEH level 1 - 4 courses
along with various other programmes including Infection Control,
Manual Handling and Fire Warden training.
David is qualified to deliver HSE approved First Aid at Work and
CPR/Defibrillation
training along with the achieving the necessary status to train and
assess trainers in this subject, and is also qualified to tutor
Basic Phlebotomy. David has many years
experience of delivering various training programmes and also
teaching PiC residents with learning difficulties and psychiatric
disorders.
Brian McDonald
PiC North West Services Management of Violence &
Aggression Tutor
NTC Lead Tutor – MVA Courses
Brian has 20 years experience working within medium secure
psychiatric services. He
has worked for Partnerships in Care since 1991 commencing his
employment at
Kneesworth House Hospital. He has been a qualified tutor since 1999
when he acquired his teaching qualification ENB A74 through
Merseycare NHS Trust. In 2004 he completed his GSA Tutor
qualifications to become Lead MVA Tutor for PiC’s North
West Services. His role involves teaching over 800 PiC personnel in
physical and verbal interventions. Brian is also qualified to teach
CPR, Search, Handcuff and Security. As well as the MVA modules in
physical interventions, he also delivers courses in deescalation,
conflict resolution and dealing with challenging behaviours to our
external clientele.
Darren McDonald B.Sc., M.Sc.
PiC Lead Health & Safety Advisor
Darren has worked for Partnerships in Care since 1995 and has
chaired the Corporate Health and Safety Committee since completing
an MSc in Occupational Safety, Health and Environmental Management
in 2003. Darren is a Chartered Member of the Institution of
Occupational Safety and Health and is also the Institution’s Chair
of the Healthcare Group Committee. Previous roles within the
Healthcare Group include Vice Chair, Network and Events Champion
and finance Champion. Darren tutors the IOSH Managing Safely
courses for the PiC National Training Centre and is a regular
speaker at conferences, seminars and events.
Emma Shillabeer B.Sc., M.Sc.
Lead Psychologist, PiC Arbury Court
Hospital
Mental Health Professional Development Course Tutor
Emma has worked for Partnerships in Care for over 7 years and is
currently Lead
Psychologist at Arbury Court Hospital. She is a Forensic
Psychologist, registered with
the Health Professions Council and Chartered by the British
Psychological Society (BPS). She is also a Chartered Scientist and
Associate Fellow of the BPS. Emma holds a Certificate in Training
Practice accredited by the Institute of Personnel and
Development. She has worked as a psychologist for over 12 years
with male and female offenders in prison and forensic mental health
settings. Emma is also a RAID© trainer for The Association for
Psychological Therapies (APT). In addition to delivering courses
within our Mental Health Professional Development schedule, Emma
has presented at national and international conferences on
treatment strategies for mentally disordered aggressive and
sexually aggressive offenders.
Wayne Hughes B.Sc., M.Sc.
Senior Forensic Psychologist, PiC The Spinney
Hospital
Mental Health Professional Development
Course Tutor
Wayne Hughes is a Chartered and Registered Forensic Psychologist
with 11 years
experience of working in forensic settings. Wayne is currently
employed as a Senior
Psychologist at The Spinney Medium Secure Psychiatric Hospital and
has worked for
Partnerships in Care for two and a half years. Prior to this Wayne
worked for HM
Prison Service across a range of settings including a young
offender institution as well as high and medium secure adult
prisons. He has been involved in the assessment and treatment of
violent, sexual and acquisitive offenders and is particularly
interested in the areas of managing challenging behaviour and
treatment of clients with emotion management difficulties. Wayne
delivers courses within the Mental Health Professional Development
schedule.
