Pelham Woods Open Day 3 Dec 09

Released 02/11/2009

We are delighted that the Opening Ceremony will be performed by Elyn Saks - an endowed professor at the prestigious University of Southern California Gould School of Law. Elyn has achieved this in spite of having a diagnosis of Schizophrenia. She was only eight when her first symptoms appeared but it was not until she was an Oxford Marshall Scholar that she had her first serious episode of illness, complete with voices in her head and terrifying suicidal fantasies, which culminated in hospitalisation. Elyn later attended Yale Law School and today is a Chaired Professor of Law who researches and writes about the rights of people with mental illness. She is also an Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Diego, School of Medicine, and a Research Clinical Associate at the New Centre of Psychoanalysis, and now lives in Los Angeles with her husband.
