Case study

John

John was transferred to Kemple View from his local psychiatric intensive care unit. He had a diagnosis of treatment-resistant schizophrenia complicated by drug misuse, repeated serious assaults, self-injury, non-adherence to medication and disengagement from services. He had required numerous admissions over the previous five years.

Following admission to Kemple View, John underwent a comprehensive multidisciplinary assessment, and a positive therapeutic alliance was established. He collaborated with the team in a range of interventions, including augmented treatment with an atypical antipsychotic drug, occupational therapy, and therapeutic groups that addressed cognitive skills, mental health awareness and substance misuse. During individual sessions he engaged in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and developed a strategy for staying well.
Having progressed through a graded programme of community leave, John was successfully discharged to supported accommodation (identified through working closely with his local healthcare team), almost two years ago. He continues to make progress in his recovery. His self-esteem and relationships with his family have improved and he now attends college to study for a vocational qualification.

Case studies are based on real events, but names have been changed to protect the identity of the individuals involved.
